Hi, I posted a while back (last year) about HADD training, and attempted to "train" using HADD's Approach to Distance running to build a base and prepare me for harder XC training.
Sadly, I only managed 30-40 mpw, got put on Beta blockers due to some sort of SVT problem I had, and basically trained the old fashioned way. On May 1, 2014 I was finally taken off the beta blockers (had surgery) and was able to run at my real heart rates again and decided to give HADD a second chance.
(HADD is John Walsh, who died in 2011, there was some huge thread about his training in 2003)
My PR'S:
400m: :59s (with trainers)
1600: 4:53
3200: 11:07
5000: 16:50
HM: 1:32:00 (2012, over 2 years ago)
note I was injured most my senior track season this year and only mustered a 4:53. I also ran my 5K and 1600 PR while I was still on beta blockers. (not on them anymore thank god)
Starting fresh, from scratch, (with my running background behind me) After 3 weeks of no running (surgery) I decided to build up for a good HADD phase 1. I started around middle of May 2014 at around 20-30 mpw and built up over the last 2 months...
Right now, I'm at 50 MPW. This is how my typical week looks like:
Mon: 60 Min Easy 140-145 HR
Tue: 45 Min Work 164-170 HR
Wed: 45 Min Easy 140-145 HR
Thu: 45 Min Easy 140-145 HR
Fri: 45 Min Work 164-170 HR
Sat: 90 Min Long 140-155 HR
Sun: Rest
(45-50 Miles a week)
I'm 18, just graduated HS and will not be running college XC until next year or so, which gives me more time for base.
Right now, I'm just BUILDING A BASE, so that I can benefit much more from REAL training later on. I'm "training to train."
After this round of HADD'S Phase 1, I will go into 5K-HM specific training, using Daniel's Formula, with some of HADD'S Phase 2A workouts, etc.
The work days (164-170 HR) are only 45 min because I'm supposed to build up to being able to run them at a "sustained pace" for 60 min without my HR drifting, then once I master that zone I move up to 170-176 bpm and build up. Problem is that'll take way too long, and would it be bad if I only mastered 164-170 then gradually introduced 5K specific training?
My key race is a Turkey Trot 5K this Thanksgiving (Late November).
I plan on continuing for 6 more weeks until around mid-September with this Base, then start speedwork, tempos, hills, etc. with a local 5k race every week or two.
I'm kind of stuck as to what I should do...should I continue HADD all year or can I begin 5K Training with what I have so far around September, then next year continue with HADD where I left off (and build to 70-80 MPW)
And should this "5K-Specific" training be for 2 months or is 3 months too long? What do I do after that? I'd like to do track (1600-3200m) but I'll only have December and January train...I really don't know how this "cycle" thing works..
I'd really like to get into the 15's this year in the 5K (last year I ran 16:30 literally off 10-20 mpw during season while on a freaking beta blocker).
I also ran HADD'S 5x2400m test and I'll post my results from the 2 times I did it later...
Any input from someone like Pete (HADD'S friend) or anyone here from Letsrun who knows about HADD or training is highly appreciated.
Thanks!
