I have been employed for over a year with an engineering company as a building engineer and drafter. About 80% of my job consists of drafting, and office related activities, and about 20% is going to job sites and monitoring work. I live in one of the most expensive places in the USA, and feel as though I am quite underpaid, but I am trying to get a better idea of what I should be making.
My company bills each hour that I work to the project I work on, and I am paid a fraction of that billable rate. I currently make 18% of my billable rate. I understand that business overhead in my area is high, but even if as little as half of the 82%, 41% of my billable rate goes to overhead, that seems quite high considering the amount of people that are employed. There is no profit sharing, so the remainder goes in the pockets of the partners that own the company. Score one for corporate America.
A few questions for engineers out there, if you all don't mind answering under the anonymity of this forum:
How long have you been with your current company?:
How many years, in total, of experience do you have?:
What does your company charge for your services per hour?:
What fraction of this rate do you make?:
