I say in the next two years, and no longer. Cain is in 4 flat shape right now and she's aiming to peak in late august. The world better be on notice.
I am not sure Jenny Simpson has much room for improvement but would love to be proved wrong.

It's a long way from 4 flat to 3:57. I think you'll be proved wrong.
Jenny will beat it before Cain.
It's a long way from the 4:04.61 that Mary has actually run to the 3:59.9 that Jenny ran in college. Don't even talk about 3:57 until she breaks 4. Jenny and Wetmore know that they have to get into 3:56 territory and significantly improved kick speed to have a chance of beating Aregawi when it counts, so I don't think they're done yet...but no American woman but Mary Slany and Suzy have even gotten near where Jenny is right now. I expect Jenny to break the AR this year and to get sub-3:57 for the Olympics if not sooner.
Also, the male equivalent to where Jenny is right now is 3:29 flat. Salazar is a long way form achieving either.
that Salazar's could never run 3:29 not at 56 years old or 26 for that matter.

Cain needs to go for the WJR of 3:51.34 by Lang Yinglai.
lol. you ppl have no clue do you?
cain can run 3:59 right now if she got in the right diamond league race. when its all said and done she'll have a 3:56 to her name. she's that good
She's running 2 DL 1500s in the coming weeks, so we'll know soon enough.
She may get the AR this season.
when will you stop pleasuring yourself to Mary Cain? that goes for everyone on this site

Proved? Proven? Ah, who really cares anyway, English sucks.
Any number of things could hinder her to cut her PR down to (basically) 3:57 flat. The odds are definitely stacked against her, but it's Mary Cain. She has been proving everyone wrong and blowing minds for a while now.
She will NEVER break the 1500 record. Ajee Wilson may some day however.

What is Wilson's 1500 pr?
Ajee's PR for the 1500m is 4:12.10. She won't get the 1500m AR since she's only a pure two-lap runner and not used to the distance longer than 800m.
2015 is possible and 2016 is almost definite. She is not Simpson just yet, but she got a late start to the season and has better 800m ability already. Simpson should break the record this year, but Cain might just get under 4 this year if she gives it a shot next month and then 3:57 low will certainly be possible next year without any of the distractions that gave her a late start this year.
Wilson will get the 800m record next year. She may well get the A standard in the 1500m at some point but she would have to change her training quite a bit to ever approach 4 flat.
She's got about 2 more 1500s this season. Will get sensationally close to 4 flat. Then off to class. No record.
Next year she'll be focusing on the junior records she doesn't yet own, and preparing for Worlds, knowing Salazar no senior record attempts before that. She'll have about 3 more chances after Worlds. But burned out by Worlds, no record.
In 2016 she'll be totally focused on the Olympics, knowing Salazar there will be no record attempts before that. Afterwards, burned out by the Olympics, no record. In the meantime Jenny or Alexa will have taken it below 3:57.
In 2017 Worlds again, etc.
In 2018 graduates college, with no major championships that year she realizes it's time to get a life and goes to medical school after taking the summer off.
Basically never.

I will eat my shoe if Cain gets below 4:00 this season, much less 3:57 or the AR, as others have suggested. However, I do think she might one day get it.
But Simpson will get it first, and get it down to 3:56 or 3:55. She's that good, and she is my current favorite American runner, male or female.
