Bring water bottle on run?

don't be silly, water won't keep you cool on a five mile run. Unless you're "running" 12 minute miles. Splash some water on yourself halfway through, maybe, but drinking water != staying cool.

i carry a handheld bottle with me if i'm going to be out much over an hour, but for 5 miles, not a chance.

If I'm running over 90 minutes I'll stash a water bottle at the halfway point to hydrate. I noticed I start to fall apart after about 13 miles if I don't drink along the way. But there is no way I would carry a hand held bottle or one of those super duper hydration belts.

5 miles? No need.

About 90 minutes is when I start to feel like a drink would be nice, but not really essential.

Have a glass of water before you set out...

I'm worried I'd get a cramp if I had water before my run. I get really dehydrated around mile 3. I'm just afraid it'd be annoying to carry. How do I know when to switch which hand it's in? I could alternate each mile so that one arm doesn't get too tired, but I don't have a GPS watch to find the half mile mark for runs of an odd number of miles (like my 5 later today).

Fill the bottle, then drink it all before you run.

drink 16 oz. 2 hours before your run, then 8 oz. 1 hour before. Take a sip or two right before your run, and you should prevent dehydration and cramps. Forget the water bottle. And let me guess...by dehydration you mean your mouth is wee bit dry.

While you shouldn't actually need to drink anything for a 5 mile run, if you think you will want something to drink, then bring a bottle of water (not a "water bottle," just a bottle of Dasani or something). If you decide it is too uncomfortable or that you don't really need it, you can just throw it away during your run.

Surely this is a joke!

Wouldn't that still give me a cramp? Today I planned my run for when it wasn't that hot out and survived, but I still am left pondering this issue for when it's hot again.

Dehydration is no joke... and don't call me Shirley!

Bear in mind it takes 20 minutes for the glass of water you drink to start hydrating the body. You should be drinking a bit 30 minutes before your run.

5 miles? Can't you just run past a tap at about the 20 minute mark? You can drink a bit and throw some water over your head.

My experience is it's usually joggers and primarily women. Nothing wrong with it but strickly amateur stuff.

OP got me but i'll respond to this... i run a lot on the trails and in the mountains, where carrying water and maybe some food on any longer runs is a necessity. i got used to carrying it on 2-3 hour runs there, so on the rare occasion i run that long on the road, if it's hot, it's definitely nice to have a handheld. i'd rather have it with me and not have to slow down to find a fountain, and the good ones you don't even notice once you're used to it. the nathan quickshots are only like 10 oz, so for a tough 90 minute run it's nice to be able to take a gel or two and rehydrate a couple times without breaking stride. slower, longer runs i like the nathan speedraw which is like 18 ounces... plenty for a couple hours and doesn't get in the way unless you're going for it.

Me and a friend once hid water bottles in some bushes and when we got back there someone had opened them and tipped the contents on the floor.

If you are a starter, why not? Eventually, you will build up a tolerance and not need water as much

Elites never hydrate; why should you?
