letsrun i think dawit sayeum would have to be favored, 5 second better personal best, beat jenny simpson handily in new york diamond league.
i think not only would dawit sayeum favored, i also wonder if cain is in the 3000 because salazar feels her chances are better there than it would be in the 1500 SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE of dawit sayeum.
In my article I wrote of Mary Cain at the IAAF World Junior Championships:
"Had Cain chosen the 1500m here, she would be a gold medal favorite."
I didn't write "the gold medal favorite." She would be among the favorites for gold.

So that settles it. Both are right. Sort of.
I am already over Cain and that whole Cain circus... The kid is weird and from what I have seen as of late a bit full of herself... I seriously hope Alexa goes Pro her senior year of HS Joins the Al Sal Thyroid traveling road show and put Cain on her Ear... No Pun intended.. I know it is a long shot but one can dream

Then you meant "contender" not "favorite."
Also, you meant "if Cain had chosen" where you wrote "had Cain chosen."

Yes, there can only be ONE favorite, not multiple. Contender would have been the better choice or MEDAL favorite.
I hope Cain can be humble and let her running do the talking in the future.
only 1 of 2 ethiopians (etagegn woldu) will run the 3k, so cains chances got better of winning the 3k. wont be easy though lillian rengruk kasait is the world youth champ.
If the pace is honest from the gun, it may take 8:40-8:45 to win. Cain should still be in the hunt for the win though. If it is tactical, Cain has the speed to kick with the east africans.
David Monti is the elite athlete coordinator for NYRR events. HE IS NOT THE PRESS. Everything that he writes and all of his fake press releases are simply written for promo pieces for the NYRR. Sometimes he is kissing a$$ of a potential athlete that he wants for an event or a coach or agent that he is trying to impress.
When reading RRW or anything that has the Monti name on it keep the above in mind.

Is English your second language?
Here's a tip: don't make it more complicated than it needs to be. What he wrote is perfectly acceptable.
While LetsRun may not be disagreeing with Monti, I believe they're right. 3000m seems to be a softer event given the entry list, and she is currently stronger against that list than against the 1500m field (although the 3k is far from a slam dunk). Nice gamesmanship. Also a win-win for the US because it gets both Elise and Alexa both into the meet. If they'd all run the 1500 only two would be competing. Finally, Alexa, at least, ought to be considered one of the favorites (not the favorite) at World's with a strong shot at a silver and a small probability for a gold. Which is possibly the best that Mary could have hoped for.
