So every 10 years or so someone makes a 1000m record attempt and it's a big deal?
El G, Geb and Bekele didn't give a rat's dingleberry about the 3000, they just wanted to beat Komen who had happened to give a superhuman performance at the distance. If Komen had run 2768.5 meters instead, they would have spent years banging their heads against his 2768.5 meter record.
Since they failed, nobody cares about the 3000, except indoors where it is a standard, not off distance. At which the only active runner to have gone sub-7:30 twice is the great Augustine Choge, which you probably didn't know because indoors isn't a big deal either, is it.
