Currently I have been running summer base mileage since late May, 2 weeks at 80+, 1 week at 60ish, and so on. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, my team does either a fartlek workout or a hilly tempo run (3-5 miles). One week while not with my team I did 5x1600m on the track averaging 5:20pace with 1 lap jog recovery, and most of my tempo runs are around 5:20-5:30 pace.
Anyways, today I did a 3 mile tempo with my team, but I will be out of town this Thursday. I'll be able to run either on a 5 mile stretch of dirt road (great for running, some small hills, mostly flat), a track, or could make a grass loop in a pasture. I could run what I normally do, but would like to mix things up some.
I'm considering running 800s on the dirt road or track at 5k goal pace (sub16), and would like to know how to plan out the workout (how many reps, how long of rest, best surface of the three to run it on).
Or, is it too early to consider running a goal pace workout? First race is over a month away, but the main reason is I want to get my legs going at a faster than usual pace, and mix things up. Next week I'll resume normal workouts and mileage. If it's too early, what is a good 800 workout for this time in the year, so I'm not stuck with another 5 mile fartlek or something?
