I am a college guy and want to go as close to 25 flat as I can this season. We will race on some fast/flat courses this season. I haven't had consistent training. I ran 26:20 last year, but was injured in the Spring so haven't had a good amount of mileage under me.
I know everyone is different, but what are some key parts of training that indicates 25:00 race shape for the summer? What should I be doing?
In the past I've always been at 60-65 miles a week at my highest, but usually only 50-55 in singles. For the remainder of the summer, I am going to try to get up to 80 miles a week with 68 of it being singles. My double runs are just easy 4 milers at 7:05-7:30 pace.
Recently I've done a 4 mile tempo at 5:45 and a 6 mile tempo at 6:00. I know these both have to be faster/stronger. What kind of summer tempos is a 25:00 guy doing?
Just did a 12 mile long run at 6:45 average. Longest run I've ever done was 13 miles, which I haven't done since a year ago. Planning to get up to 14 miles in 2 weeks, and I will try to average 6:30 (usually starting out around ~7:00 and closing the last few in 6:00-6:20). Is this a sufficient weekly long run to go 25 low for 8k?
Do I have a chance to go 25 low this Fall considering I don't have consistent training under me? I feel like I can gain a good amount of fitness between now and Sept/Oct but even thinking about going 15:00 for 3 miles sounds a bit tough in my head.
My best 5k is 15:44 from high school but that was a few years ago and I just haven't had the best training since then. I know if I had consistent and good training season in season out since high school that I would be a sub 25 guy by now. But that's besides the point. I just wanted to point out an old PR for reference I guess.
Thoughts?
