This guy is at least 21 years old. We've been here before. Don't be naive.
In 1992, Haile Gebrselassie won both the World Junior Championships 10000m and 5000m races at age 19, and in 1993, he went on to win the World Championship 10000m and earn a silver in the World Championship 5000m at age 20.
Sure, it's possible that he was "age-cheating", but considering his 2:03:59 at 35, and his high performances afterwards, including a 60:41 half marathon at 40 I would say that there's a pretty good chance that even if he "guessed" his age, as he likely did, he was probably pretty spot on.
True 18-20 year old phenoms aren't very common at all. I'm aware of that. In fact, Gebrselassie may be the only one that I really believe was legitimate, and that's only because his career has been so long and incredible, that his performance at that age is completely reasonable.
Without a doubt, I can admit that Isaiah Koech probably wasn't 17 when he ran 12:53 indoors to defeat Eliud Kipchoge, and that Ndiku may not be as young as he claims, considering he has been documented as having 2 birthdays.
However, there's no reason not to hope that we're finally seeing another Gebrselassie. Although, in light of the fact that he's been 18 years old in both 2013 and 2014, I suppose that it's unlikely now.
