Let me start by saying, I love soccer and am not an American that wants radical changes.
But as I continued to watch arguably the most boring semi in WC history yesterday, I couldn't help but wonder a few things.
(It only reaffirmed my belief that having penalty kicks is in a world cup knockout round is just stupid. I get it in normal tournaments and what not, but not the World Cup. Just keep playing. A "they deserve to be tired for the final" penalty was only appropriate for both teams.
At the very least, get rid of penalties for the World Cup final. If the World Cup wants to be modern, be modern like Wimbledon. Wimbledon now has tiebreaks but not in the 5th set. The World Cup final at a minimum should be like the 5th set of Wimbledon, play on.)
But I was daydreaming about offsides and intellectually started to wonder, "Would eliminating the offside rule make the game higher scoring (more breakaways) or lower scoring (the defense would be scared of the breakaways so it would sit back, but if this happens the field is wide open in the midfield)?"
What do you think? Would eliminating offsides increase or decrease scoring?
I dont want to eliminate offsides, I just want to know the answer to my question.

PS. My radical idea if you aren't going to expand the goal by 1 foot every 30 minutes in OT would be to ban passes back over midfield in overtime.
