A significant development in the story. The female basketball player involved has been suspended for the month of November for her role in the incident and has issued an apology stating that she "initiated the first contact."

The school is not making clear what that contact was but it seems evident from the suspension that it was more than a hard foul in the course of the game. From discussion at the fan board about eyewitness testimony, the most likely scenario now seems to be something like this:
They went up for a rebound together and came down in some kind of dispute. She pushed him hard enough to knock him to the court (there is no question he somehow wound up on his butt) and he came up punching.

As for the apparent psychology of the incident: she's the senior star on the women's b-ball team; he's the freshman footballer coming into her domain; she gets assertive about it; he ups the ante.
No question he is gone from Texas Tech for good. Still remains to be seen what if any charges will be brought by the DA.
