“Scannell, who is no longer an official coach at Grand Blanc HS after a falling-out with the athletic director but still coaches the distance runners..."
Always has to be one of those doesn't it. How can you still coach if your not the coach? How does he coach the distance runners still?
Grant's going to do well.... but there's a few guys who are going to make it up to that elite level, and probably move him down a notch...
Blake Haney was hands down the top returnee from last year.
He had an excellent season but Grant moved ahead.
One thing is for sure. It's going to be great for the fans :-)

He likes pie.
PS is he really that good at soccer? He must be pretty damn good if he's even considering it
If you are running 40 mpw AND playing club soccer, then you are really running 60 mpw. This kid is working hard. I find it disrespectful to suggest it is coming easy.

He has to be working hard and benefiting from his soccer "mileage" to win Footlocker as a junior, no doubt about that.
And I really, really like the form he showed in that Dream Mile, more so than anyone from last year's class, which was supposed to be a great class.
But it seems likely that the soccer "distraction" and the publicity focus on the Dream Mile means we won't know for a while whether he's going to commit himself to being a 5000m/10000m runner and someone who can contend for an NCAA xc title.
Being a 3:50 miler doesn't make you a star anymore. Being a 3:50 miler who can take that speed up to 5k/10k is the real deal.
What's Fisher's fastest 800m?

I love this kid's attitude. You run races to win not to hit a time. I also love that his coach is so sensible in bringing him along slow, and not pushing workouts. How many times have you heard of a coach call off a workout if his guy didn't have any "snap"? I sure as heck didn't get that, my coach would just yell at me to push through it. No wonder I got injuries and low iron.
Mark my words, if Fisher stays healthy and pursues running, we could very well be looking at our future major championship star. His race savvy reminds me a lot of an early Centro.
IIRC, Bob Kennedy ran even less mileage in HS [and didn't play soccer], then won NCAA XC as a true freshman. Not sure Grant Fisher is as extreme a case as Kennedy, but it will certainly be interesting to see how he develops.

2 flat
His 800 PR is 1:55.76
But I'm sure Fisher can run much faster than that in the 800; he just hasn't ever focused on it (at least not to my knowledge).
Someone needs to make a list of the sub 4:03 milers as juniors that didn't break 4 as a senior. It is much longer than the ones that did:) Or heck even just the 4:03 juniors that didn't run faster as a senior.

Better than Saarel?
Considering Saarel had junior times of 4:16 and 9:01, yes, better than Saarel at the time. We'll see how Fisher pans out though.
On another note, what the heck happened to the class of 2011 and 2012?
Grant Fisher appears to have a lot of talent and he and his coach have found training that works. However, I don't think the average ambitious HS runner will have success on 40 mpw while doing another sport at the same time. I'm curious what kind of success Fisher's coach has had with above average but not super talented runners.
The biggest mistake I made in HS was not working up to 70mpw the summer before entering college. I mostly averaged 45-50 in HS and as a 5k/10k runner in college it took me until sophomore year to build my mileage up and approach NCAA qualifying times in track.
His rested 800 ability is obviously sub 1:51 now
Must be nice to run that fast off of such measly mileage.
