Actually, neither of these kids are that well known outside of NJ. Baker is lot more known, but granted Cain, Efferison and Cranny have dominated the H.S. girls headlines this year. What's interesting is that from a quality standpoint, McGlaughlin's 56.9 400H is probably the best H.S. girl's performance this year and she is only a 9th grader. I am also going to assume based on her 400m hurdle time, she could probably run about 53 flat in the 400m. - That's scary.
Jersey girls have plenty of competition in state. Meet of Champions was insane. Most are done for the yr. You won't see them at NB nationals running against weaker fields than their all group meet. DI coaches know where they are ;)
I for one appreciate the heads up, trackcoach - cause sure enough, here out west I'd never heard of either of them. On my radar now...
Gess winning XC MOC this fall wasn't enough for ya?
I think Gess is a bit under the radar considering how good she is. I think part of the reason is because she played basketball instead of doing indoor track. Her only indoor appearance was doing the anchor leg of the DMR for Haddonfield at New Balance Indoor Nationals. Ran a 4:48 leg in the DMR, but I think people missed it because she didn't do any individual events. She also didn't come back to that time until the NJ outdoor MOC.
I was just reading up on McLaughlin today and was wondering, "Was there anything written on letsrun about here last month?"
I then found this thread.
She's incredible.
Here is a good article on her after she became the first person to win 100h and 400h at the same NJ Meet Of Champions. She also ran a 52.2 on the 4 x 400 and all of it at the age of 14:
At US juniors last week, she came within .20 of beating the NCAA champ in the event.
McLaughlin ran 55.63 to Shamier Little's 55.43. We thought little was an incredible prodigy (and she is) but McLaughlin is absurdly good.
It's the #2 time in US HS hirtory, is 20th in the world and yet she can't go to world juniors because at age 14, she's too young!!!

I kind of saw this type of performance coming, but I thought it would be next year. This kid is insanely talented, she is only a few seconds off of the 400h HSR, which I had always put of par with Kim Gallagher's 800m HSR. Running under a minute makes you a H.S. star, 55 seconds would be competitive with the boys in most states and the fact that she is a true freshman makes it even more incredible. Btw, she could have won that race, I think she messed up her steps on the next to last hurdle and if she could have hurdled that barrier with her left leg, she would be the only 9th grader to ever win a national jr title.
