While Komon has the true PR of the field (Road WR), I have a feeling this may be a race set up for the kickers for a winning time in the low 27s. Another runner that might get overlooked is Bedan Karoki (Anyone remember him in the 2011 Payton Jordan race?). If the pace goes slow, watch out for this guy to make a move well before 9k
And Mary Cain is also officially in the 800m. See http://us4.campaign-archive1.com/?u=9a55b0e30ebbe4af12be96f3c&id=eba0ea0c6d&e=7ff08fa709 for the meet press release announcing the fields for the men's 10000m, the women's 800m and the B heat of the men's 800m.

I think you may be right. They might be content just to get the A standard out of the way for next year.
Who?
Is this even on national TV (like the CrossFit Games)?

I don't know if things have changed since Oxy or because of the weather but a few weeks ago the AR was Rupp's goal.

Last year, NBC bounced a NHL Stanley Cup playoff game to show the Pre Classic in prime time.
How tiny a share of sports fans know or care who Galen Rupp is compared to how tiny a share of sports fans know or care who Rich Froning is might be a close race. The difference is, compared to Gatlin, Felix, Merritt, and such, Rupp is a nobody, but Froning is all CF has.
A USATF High Performance women’s 800 meters welcomes back American prep sensation Mary Cain, who set a national high school record in last year’s race at 1:59.51. A number of other sub-2 Americans include World Indoor champion Chanelle Price (1:59.75), Maggie Vessey (1:57.84), and Phoebe Wright (1:58.22).

Was this specifically stated anywhere. I remember a while back there was talk about a Lagat AR but then Lagat was like "wtf are people talking about, I've never said I was gunning for that"
The ladies 800m and dudes 5k are the races to watch. The boys 10k, not so much: sit and kick, ugh!
weather says high of 79 on Friday - probably too hot for a fast race.

A little more detail. Looks like Rupp has the fastest PB with several others under 27:00.
http://preclassic.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=120&do=news&news_id=263381Looks like Thunderstorms for tomorrow in the forecast, and then partly cloudy on Thurs. & Fri. Hope that will keep the pollen down. Though it's supposed to get up to 78, the 10K is at almost 9:30 so it may be in the low 60's. Supposed to get under 50 degrees at night.
The only question here is DNS or DNF.
I'm betting on DNF.
Rupp tends not to complete Diamond League races he enters.
Disappointed that Mary Cain is out of the 1500m but the womens 800m also looks very good.

I don't think it was, I know that myself and a few others predicted/speculated he could go for an AR attempt if they got a good 10K together. This seems to support the thought, but doesn't specify the "fast pace" that has been asked for.
http://preclassic.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=120&do=news&news_id=263381(Rupp is Ready to Rip a 10k at Pre Classic
Eugene, Oregon – Galen Rupp has already set two American records this year, and with good conditions, his own American 10k best of 26:48.00 could be in jeopardy Friday night at the Prefontaine Classic.
The landmark 40th Pre Classic will be held May 30-31 at historic Hayward Field. The men’s 10k is the final event of a Friday night session known as Distance Night in Eugene, which is free to all, thanks to long-time sponsor NIKE.
Rupp, a 27-year-old Portland native, has asked for a fast pace on a track where he has won on the high school, collegiate, and professional level. He set the current AR in 2011, and has since earned silver at the 2012 Olympics. In January, he ran away from the field at shorter distances to set indoor ARs at 2 miles (8:07.41) and 5k (13:01.26).)
9:30pm should make for very nice conditions. The very fact that Rupp has apparently committed to running the race tells me that pollen is forecasted to be not too bad.

It was actually, but not in print. I really can't give you more than that unfortunately. But this was the original thought on the race but this was 4 weeks ago and I imagine things could have changed from that point. I haven't heard anything since the original statement.
So Mary Cain ended up ducking the competition in the 1500 after all. Sad.

Hey Rupp, if you want a fast pace why not set one yourself?

Probably for the same reason that nearly every good runner who wanted to set a record asks for a fast pace.
