My son is a HS Junior who just finished his first track season. His primary events are the 400m, 800m, 4x400m relay and 4x800m relay. He feels like he's not as good at 400m as he is at 800m, but based on his times I wonder if he might be selling himself short:
400m: Season start 1:00.10, PR 0:57.25
800m: Season start 2:28.15, PR 2:14.05 (he also ran a 2:10.5 split once in the 4x800m)
Both PRs were in the last meet he raced that distance in. He has run the 800m more often than the 400m, which might account for the greater improvement. He also ran the 1600m once at the start of the season, finishing 5:41.6, but never ran it again. I did time his laps twice in the 4x800m (not the straight 800m, unfortunately), and both times his second lap was about 2 seconds slower than the first. Haven't done anything similar for the 400m since I can't clearly see the 200m mark from the stands.
Anyway, based on all that, does he look more suited to the 400m, the 800m, or are they more-or-less equal? Or is that insufficient information to evaluate from? I just don't want him to mentally treat the 400m as his "inferior" distance if it really isn't; it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
