Roller Derby.
Very good find, Lo.
Brooklyn Tech HS NYC had the spitting image of that one right down to the little corner platform. The Tech track was above the gym floor and doubled as a balcony for basketball games.
Two very similar but with a different turn profiles hung over the HS of Commerce HS gym and the East 54th Street NYC Parks and Recreation gym. Commerce is gone and I believe the 54st got a facelift so it might.
Thanks for reminding me where I spent my afternoons in 1959!!!
Interesting!
I trained on that track for most of 5 winters.
Those are some of the members of the East York Track Club training in Hart House at the University of Toronto. The track is 153 yards long (11 1/5 laps per mile).
That picture may have been taken by Mike Turk.
There is a great deal of history in that picture. Questions?
I'm curious what shoes everyone is wearing. They look ahead of their time. Except for the tattered Keds on the leader.
Is that just regular tiling one would see in the hallways? I can kind of make out the squares for the individual tiles.
Cambridge YMCA; still in use. Like running in a bowl.

Did they dig the track out of the floor?
There is one like this at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association Club. I never ran on it, but I remember it kind of freaked me out because of the curve and the open center.

Orville-Have you made any progress in finding someone to write a book about Fred Foot?

The book that was being written about Coach Fred Foot has been cancelled.
That indoor track looks down on a basketball court. The track is made of cork. That track, with its sharp corners, helped make us among the best indoor runners on the continent.
Bruce Kidd is the runner on the far left hand is currently the Warden of Hart House. David Bailey, Canada's first miler under four minutes. is the last runner on the rail. Both Bruce, a 1964 Olympian, and David, a 1968 Olympian have Ph.H.
In early 1962, I raced a marathon off training on that track and Bruce ran 5,000 meters in 13:33.8 while still only 18 when he defeated defending Olympic Champion Murray Halberg in Compton that same year.
It's contributors like Orville that keep me coming back to Letsrun and filtering through the crap. Carry on!
I ran a very low key 2 mile race on that track a few years ago. Kind of tough to pass but much better to run on than you would think from looking at the picture. Hart House also has a beautiful indoor pool and great pubs in the quad in the summer!
One time the AC was closed for some reason and I did a 10 miler on the Hart House track, major snow storm. Fun!
Columbia U's Dodge Gym has a track like this. It is 10 laps to the mile.
I wonder if the track team trains there or more at the Armory. I think Cleveland State has a rectangular version.

There is an error in there. The track is eleven and a half laps per mile. We often ran races and time trials in Hart House in the winter.
In the fall of 1961, 18 year old Bruce Kidd won the USA AAU Cross Country Championship in Lexington Kentucky on US Thanksgiving Day. We had trouble getting back to Toronto on Friday Morning in time for work or school.
We had Thanksgiving with a family in Kentucky. They made Coach Foot a Kentucky Colonel. Then the airline had to put us up in Buffalo Thursday night because the plane could not reach Toronto due to fog. Our group still ran 12 x 2 laps with a 1 lap jog between that Friday night. Our group then jogged a little. It was a very light workout consisting of 5 miles total.
Reminds me of the old "dungeon" track underneath Laird Stadium at Carleton College. 220yd track with straightaways that must have been at least 80 yards long! Some people used to call it the "paperclip." Very steep banked turns.
Through at least the 1970's Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio had a small cork track above their basketball court in their old gym. Looked very similar to the one in the original post.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Rest in Peace Adrian Lehmann - 2:11 Swiss marathoner. Dies of heart attack.
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
I think Letesenbet Gidey might be trying to break 14 this Saturday
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
