The gut is sometimes called the second brain. People seem to be able to sense many things with their guts- fear, apprehension, excitement, nervousness, courage, etc. In fact, human language evolved to encompass words to express these feelings- e.g., guttural reaction, gutsy etc. Not surprisingly, the gut is comprised of a large number of sensory neurons (and other neurons) with lots of neuroendocrine cells all bathed in neurotransmitters.
Do you think it's possible that the gut is actually a sense organ capable of generating or at least contributing to our feelings/emotions?
