Building a house: would you just buy a nice wine fridge (SubZero, VinoTemp), or create a space for storage? Am only looking at holding about 50 bottles. Any success with storage in basements?

For only 50 bottles, go with a wine fridge--I built a cellar a few years back based on the book "how to build a wine cellar" that works adequately, but the foot print is kind a big once you incorporate a door and the walls...
50 bottles? thats like a months worth, just drink them!

Pics?
If you only intend to keep 50 bottles at a time, buy a wine fridge. If you have a walk-in crawl space, you could still keep the wine fridge in there.
I have about 400 bottles at any given time, so I had to build some racks in my crawlspace. Luckily it is a walk-in space dug back into a hill and maintains a nice 65 all summer and 55 all winter.
I have the Sub-Zero 427 and love the look and the functionality. It is also a great to have in your kitchen if you are looking at selling your house down the road. These are not cheap, but they nicely complement other high-end appliances.
When we got the unit, we never envisioned needing space for more than 50 bottles, but like bandwith and other forms of storage, we find we are using whatever we have and even the 132 bottle capacity can be limiting at times. All you have to do is join one or two wine clubs and you will wish for more storage...
