Brothers Johnson:
It would seem to me that one (it not the) key to Meb’s victory at Boston was the fact that he has had the same coach for many many (many?) years. Everyone has jumped on the AlSal train, the Schumacher bandwagon, Canova, Hudson, whatever du jour. I’m curious what you all think about the fact that Meb has for most if not all of his professional life, stayed with the same Bob Larsen. While not particularly flashy or prolific, how much does the year in year out grind account for Meb’s success? Surely the knowledge, confidence and familiarity that come from year in and year out work with one coach adds significantly to his results. Dathan’s switching from Hudson to Salazar surely (?) set him a little behind due to the adjustment period. Ryan Hall…well we know how manic he has been in his training program. It seems to this observer that Meb’s story, beyond being one of triumph, bravery and racing savvy, illustrates that an extended program with one coach whose vision may take years to accomplish. Sticking with a program and seeing it through rather than jumping on the latest fad is better? Thanks
