HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth Director of Athletics & Recreation Harry Sheehy has announced that Courtney Jaworski has been named the new head coach of women’s cross country and assistant track & field coach.
A 2006 graduate of Penn, Jaworski comes to Hanover after a serving as the head coach for both the cross country and track & field programs at Manhattanville this past year.
“I want to thank Harry Sheehy, Drew Galbraith, Sandy Ford-Centonze, Barry Harwick and the entire cross country and track & field community for bringing me on as the next women’s distance coach at Dartmouth,” Jaworski said. “I look forward to leading a group of smart, driven and passionate women towards continued individual and team success.”
Prior to Manhattanville, Jaworski was an assistant coach at Smith College and the University of Puget Sound following his professional running career with Nike’s premier Olympic development distance and middle-distance team, Oregon Track Club Elite, from 2006-08.
“We are thrilled to welcome Courtney to the Dartmouth family,” Sheehy said. “He brings a unique background as a Heps champion, an outstanding Ivy League student, and a coach at academically selective institutions. We look forward to him building on the success of our women’s distance program and bringing more individual and team titles to Hanover.”
The Dartmouth women’s team is currently in the midst of one of its most successful stretches in program history. The Big Green won the 2013 Cross Country Ivy League Heptagonal Championship and finished 16th at the NCAA Championship Meet to wrap up the fall season. They followed those strong performances by taking second at Indoor Heps in Hanover and earning a seventh-place finish at Nationals soon after in Albuquerque, the program’s best showing ever at Indoor NCAAs.
“We are very excited to have Courtney Jaworski join our coaching staff at Dartmouth,” Marjorie and Herbert Chase ’30 Head Coach of Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country Barry Harwick ’77 said. “Our women’s cross country team and distance group has enjoyed great success over recent years and we are confident that Courtney will continue to build on that tradition of excellence. Our entire staff works closely together and Courtney will be a great fit for the program.”
Jaworski is familiar with the facilities at Dartmouth, having won the mile in then-Ivy League record time (4:04.34) at the 2006 Heptagonal Championship inside Leverone Field House. In total, the former Quaker had eight Ivy titles between indoor and outdoor seasons in his collegiate career.
Thanks in large part to those numerous titles, Jaworski was tabbed as the Ivy league Indoor Championship Male Track Athlete of the Meet in both 2005 and 2006. Additionally, he was named the USTFCCCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Outdoor Male Track Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2006 and was a 2005 Outdoor First-Team All-American in the 800m.
Jaworski fills the position left by Mark Coogan’s departure and will begin his work with the Big Green in the near future.
