It's disappointing that the American women didn't finish higher, but Shalane just ran the 4th fastest marathon ever for an American woman and Desi just ran the 7th fastest (counting Shalane's run in the same race).

That's outstanding running but the international field is just too deep.
There are years where Shalane's performance would have won, this was just an incredibly deep year. Rita in my opinion is the best women's marathoner in the world and all but one of the the other women who finished ahead Shalane are perhaps among the top-10 in the world.
