She was quoted as saying she thought it would be nice if an American won the Boston 5k. Not Nice.

So people can't root for their own country? Gracious.
And then she won it
Leave it up to someone on Letsrun to make a big deal of nothing.
What's wrong with National pride? I bet the Kenyans and Ethiopians feel convicted to win because they are Kenyan/Ethiopian. It's that type of conviction our American runners need to have to have success in the ~marathon and other distance events.
Another +2 for being a fan.
I am not even American, yet I hope an American wins someday again - at least before the turn of the next century!! In fact competition should be limited to ONLY Americans in order to ensure that it happens. Let the foreigners be pacers only - don't they have their own races in Africa (and elsewhere) to run, why must Boston (or New York, Chicago, etc.) have to pay out money to non-Americans? Just sounds unpatriotic to me. Boston strong baby - but only if you actually live in Boston.

I disagree. If American marathons like Boston, NYC, and Chicago want to remain world-class, they need to invite world class competition. Unfortunately for the USA, most of the world class marathoners are the "no-name" (at least to the western world) Africans. I say let the Africans take the prize money, because right now they are the fastest and the fastest deserve to win. As an American I don't find losing to faster people a bad thing, in fact I think it makes us faster.
If an American never wins another major marathon again, so be it. If that is the case we just don't have the depth to do it.
