Not that I ever read. It is a control issue (so maybe power in that regard) tied into a skewed body image issue.

yes. absolutely some of it is a power/ego thing. and control. there is a sense of pride that comes with being "better" than others.

The power doesnt really come from having more will power than others. It comes from having the will power not to eat. The ability to control something. A lot of the time anorexics have issues with control over their own lives, so the resort to controlling the only thing they can actually control, what goes, or doesn't go, in their mouths. It also comes from a psychological rewarding factor from the brain; the lower the number, the more the reward.
Aaand of course a distorted image of beauty.
No.
I've known a lot of girls with anorexia. They invariably have an extremely negative self image. Their ego is about as poor as can be.
I think its a phobia of fat people reflected onto themselves
It's probably different for everyone.
In some respects, it is not unlike a running addiction. Starving yourself releases endorphins. The individual then becomes addicted to the high.
I don't think any of them are ever happy with themselves
I took a class in eating disorders. The prof brought some in for us to talk to. They're different. There's no doubt about that. I don't recall seeing anyone happy or hopeful or anything. They were just kind of dead inside.
as a dude who has/still deals with an ED (a guy? shocking i know!), it's all about control. a sense of being control is where you derive the little self-confidence you have.
no ego boost by restricting, only temporary relief followed by worrying about how to restrict and "survive" the rest of the day without being out of control eating-wise.
negative self-image drives the whole thing as others have said. despite being very skinny, ED folks are ashamed & embarrassed of how they look because they perceive themselves as being "fat" or "not as skinny as they should be".
