I haven't run a step in ten years...put on 45 or so pounds and lately really miss getting out and putting in a good run and would really like to compete in a some racing again too.
The question is how do I start up again without getting hurt and/or frustrated with where I am?
I'd like to hear advice and maybe some "how you did it" stories for inspiration?
Thanks
You can do it, but it will not be quick or easy. A few hints:
1. Forget you were ever a runner. Meaning, do not compare where you are to where you were back in the day. You no longer have any prs. If you compare old fat you to young fit you, you will juzt get discouraged and want to quit.
2. Lose some weight. Diet, ride a bike, elliptical, or walk until you have dropped some pounds.
3. Start by walking. When you can comfortably walk 30-40 minutes, throw in a few short jogs and slowly add from there. Remember, you are no longer a runner, you are a beginner. Act like one and take it slow.
4. Forget about racing soon. You have a lot of weight to lose and fitness to gain before you think about racing.
I offer this advise as one who missed 2+ years with injuries and slowly came back to race again. The 2 biggest things are to forget you were ever a runner and be patient.
