Great writer, RIP.
Great writer, RIP.
very sad. he was my favorite writer for years and he created a distinct and important way of reconceiving of literature's stance toward realism and gave important historical and political turns to the novel, which in the United States had become little more than a series of reports on comfortable suburban life.
gabo was more of a fantasy / scifi writer than magic realism. not much different from some of pkd's sci-fi writings.
Very sad to hear. I was just perusing through his books earlier today at Half Price Books. RIP.
RIP
Very sad to hear this. Love in the time of cholera is probably the most magical book I've had the privilege to read.....
My girlfriend and I read it to each other while floating down a river in Belize in a kayak. Magical indeed.
Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca es mejor
I keep hearing people mourn this guy today, and I'm sure I've read something by him before but can't really remember. What are some notable works of his?
I love his novels, especially One Hundred Years of Solitude, and the theme of a circular nature of history.
strangely enough, i just took 100 years of solitude out of the library on tuesday. i've been wanting to read it for a while.
Great author. Just 17 years short of solitude.
he was 87.
100 Years of Solitude is his best in its use of magical realism, its creation of an entire quasi-fictional country, character development.
Love in the Time of Cholera is very good
Autumn of the Patriarch is grim in its depiction of a Latin American tyrant.
The stories are very good as well.
Haven't read his stuff but recently was in Mompox, Bolivar, Colombia which is apparently a place that some of his books were based on. He was a pretty big deal down there.
No, Gabo is better

I don't understand why it is "very sad" that an 87 year old man has died. Would it be "very sad" if he died 20 years from now?

Yeah, wow. Big loss. Dude was a master word and story-smith.
Really enjoyed his work, especially the earlier funny stuff.
Even when being forced to read 100 years of solitude for class, I still loved it. That's a rare feat. He will be missed.
"100 Years of Solitude" was one of the few required reading books in college that I re-read years later. It was even better the second time. RIP!
Cornell West is a much better writer
