400 PR: 51.45
800 PR: 1:55
Mile (indoor) PR: 4:19
I want to run 1:51. I will be in a fast race with multiple guys sub 1:53. i was thinking 55/56?
Been doing 35mpw and speed work.
What are the ideal splits and is 1:51 possible?

what's wrong with a PR of 1:53? Seems was more plausible and likely this time around. How many people lop 4 seconds off their pr in one race, when they have as much experience as I imagine you have with those pr's? That being said with a 400 pr of 51. i would try to hang around 54 high or 55 at the bell. Goodluck

56 is way too slow to run 1"51
assuming your 400/mile PRs are recent there's no way you'll be able to drop 4 seconds off your PR.
also 55/56 is way too close to run a PR 800 unless you are an endurance monster with no speed, and 35mpw tells me otherwise.
If you're in 1:51 shape a good race would go something like 54.3/56.8 for most people
Good info so far. And the reason why I hope for a big PR is because I didn't break 2 in the 800m until this year with a 1:57 and then brought it down the next week with a 1:55. Just trying to "piggyback" on the recent success. I know shedding another 4 seconds is unlikely but the fact is it is plausible and I am going to try and get there by the end of this season.
Will see how the race progresses but I will try 54 for the first 400m and go from there.
I'm not sure 1:51 is possibly, but try to get out in 55 and go from there...just focus on being part of the race, sounds like you'll have good competition so let them do the work for you and just try your best to win. The time will come if you're capable of it.

Depending on the runner you are, the ideal race may be different. If you're really strong, you can close races closer, but the general rule of thumb is at least a 2 second positive split between your first and second 400. I was a strength oriented 800 guy so I ran my best going out slower and closing hard. Other people run faster by going out quicker and holding on. Depends on your strengths my dude. Hopefully your 400 ability is faster than that 400 PR because it will make it tough for you to go out quick enough to run a 1:51 otherwise.
I was definitely more of a speed 800 runner than a strength one, but for some reason my fastest times were always basically even splits (or even negative in high school). i realize this isn't typical.
college PR -1:51.8 >> 55 mid/56
HS PR - 1:55.8 >> 58/57
i know it's weird, but that's how it's always been for me. even post college in my early 30s running 1:59/2:00 I would go out in 59 or 60.
Whenever I would go out faster I would blow up bad in the last 150m.
i realize i'm sort of an exception to the rule, but i did just want to point out that there are exceptions.
i think 55/56 is a good plan for you, but who knows.
You need to average 55.5 seconds per lap. So, however much faster than 55.5 your first lap is, you can slow down for the second lap. But remember, if you go out any slower than 55.5, you'll have to run that much faster than 55.5 on the second lap. It doesn't matter how you choose to do it, as long as you average 55.5 seconds per lap. Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions!

54.9/57.0
but you should go out in 55 high and try to run 1:53 first. 1:51 is a different world from 1:55
Normally, I'd say go out in 54.
But in your situation, I'd say 55.
If you can come back in 57 off of 55, then you may be able to run 1:51 the next time going out in 54.
But if you go out in 55 and can't finish in 57, then you can't run 1:51 in any way right now.
