I'm a high school senior committed to a mid-tier d1 school after running PRs of 1:56 and 4:21 last year. The coach of the school said I have a spot on the team but no scholarship money unless I can lower my PRs to 1:53 and 4:15. So those are my goals this season.
Unfortunately, my season has not gone well. After cross, I spent all winter building a base again, not competing indoors. I built up to 75 mile weeks and felt really strong all winter. But now that I am racing this spring, I haven't raced well at all. In our first two invitations, I ran a 4:33 1600 and a 2:02 800. Bascially my legs feel dead, which I told my coach.
My coach thinks I've been doing too many miles and fatigued myself. So he said that for the next month, I will do all my regular days in the pool, and only run workouts and races. So basically I will be in the pool Sundays, Monday, Wendesdays, and Fridays. Then in May as championships approach, I'll begin running everyday again. I don't know if this is a good strategy. I feel like I'll lose my base.
I will listen to my coach and do what he says, but I'm wondering if this is a strategy that will work? Also, in our first duel meet, I ran a 9:48 3200 completely alone. So I think I am not burnt out.
