It seems to me that if, by your own account, the reason ESPN did this is because the network "know[s] it will resonate more with their viewers," then ESPN was not acting out of either racism or ignorance.
The first American across the line will more than likely be white (although Desi may have other designs on that). Do you think Desisa or any of the other recent winners even gives a flying crap about last year's bombing, doubtful. You think any of the foreigners even look at ESPN.com? You do understand that the particular piece of art is depicting a person crossing a finish line in a field, right? What do you suppose that might represent? Turn off the racial x-ray glasses and turn on your brain.
Movies and Tv often depict blacks as doctors, judges and scientists when in the real world they are very very very rarely not one.
Most white people from the Northeast live in a bubble where they still think they're superior and when they aren't its 'ok' because they tried.
Depicting a white person win a running event of any type is pure propaganda to make white people feel better about their physical inferiority.

Read into it what you will but I'd bet ESPN Art Dept/creator of image spent a lot of time and thought making the image as ethnically benign as possible.
