Of course 2:08 is a disappointment at first but lets put things into perspective.
Mo just finished within seconds of two 2:03 runners.

Except MO ran with the much better paced group.

and had no kick at the end to beat the Mutais.
Actually, Emmanuel Mutai passed him, not long before the finish, IIRC.

He started in a much better paced group, but a lot of the race he ran on his own, or at least having to lead a group himself.

What a stupid post.
You don't understand Kenyan running.
Farah ran a relatively well-paced race (although still not very well paced).
To use Farah's words, the Mutais ran "like champions," going for the WIN. They blew up doing so (although were able to beat Farah nonetheless).
Inferring anything about Farah's abilities relative to them is just ignorant.
+1
Please keep the excuses coming! This turd polishing is awesome.

Kenyan running at the big city marathons is to blood dope up to 20 athletes and have them go out at a very fast pace. The odds are that a couple will hang on and run a superfast time. The rest limp home or drop out.
That's what champions do!

I was just going to post that US's Ryan Vail just finished 1 place (10th) behind Mo who was just behind two 2:03 runners. So what about Vail?

LOL.
By the OP's logic with another cycle of marathon training Vail should have Mutai's scalp in New York!
Even Ritz has faster marathon PR than Mo.

Not really. The first group went out much slower than they wanted 62:30 instead of 61:45
I thought you said martinis at first. That would be classy. But he lost to the Mutais, just like I did.

This is a terrible comparison. Mo finished within 2-3 seconds of both Mutais. Vail finished over TWO MINUTES behind all 3 of them.
I have no idea why people believe Farah did exceedingly well. Yes, maybe he did well for having to play catchup to a pacer after losing his water and for being inexperienced, but overall, that's still not so great given his credentials and the hype surrounding this.
I have even LESS of an idea why people think finishing 1 place behind Mo is a reason for Vail to have done well. If he did well, it's because he ran about 2:11; not because he was beaten by a two and a half minutes by a guy running his first Marathon.
From another perspective if you ignore all the guys that ran faster than 2:08 or the course record on this day, you can almost say Mo's 2:08 is equal to a 2:03.
Mo reaction seems to suggest he was forced to ran in the second group.
He did about what I expected. Bekele did better than I expected.
Mo could get a lot better. No need to be down about a 2:08. Lots of elites run that on a rough day.
I doubt he could have done better with the lead group. He ran 1:05 for the second half, I doubt he would have had more energy had he run the first half faster.
I think he will run another soon. He will not be the king of the track forever.

It'll be interesting to see what he does next .. he won't be king of track forever, as you say .. but he IS king of track right now, so why not BE king of track instead of barely finishing in the top 10 on the road?
On the other hand, he's clearly a pretty determined guy; so it wouldn't surprise me if he sticks at the marathon and tries to improve.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
