Hey, OP here. I wasn't really the guy that got those times, but my senior teammate was the one. My team Thought that negative splits was the way to go, and I was trying to convince our best 800 runner to try the positive split tactic.
He tried it, with a ok amount of success. But it did have a reasonable amount of success with the rest of my team, as alot of them got PRs (infact, there were 2 underclassman who was running 2:12/2:11s. They made the jump to 2:08/2:07 ). In-fact, I asked one of my female teammates thats not a 800m runner to try it, and she managed to break 2:30.
A couple races later, we were facing up against a school that we didn't expect to beat. The 800m senior decided to go balls out, and run the 58 first lap. I told an underclassman to stay with the senior.
The 58 Lap split was set, and they all swept 123. But they all managed to break 2 min (the week before they came off of a super fast invitational) and one of them had a breakout performance in the 8. That guy managed to qualify for our sections, but he didn't come too close to the time set at this race. As for our guys, the underclassman managed to beat the senior (who, understandably, was tried from leading the race) in a 2:02. Senior was 2:04. A couple of my other teammates managed to get wickedly fast times too. All this, at a freaking dual meet.
My teammates and coach credited me for the reason that the team got fast times in the 800.
