Hi,
while reading the message boards I've noticed that there's great incentive for everyone running +100 miles/week, so I thought about sharing a brief story why I think that might not be the best approach for everyone.
I am 32 right now. Started running when I was 25, at the beginning could not break 20:00 for 5k. I increased my mileage and spent 3-4 years running consistently 50 miles a week, with peaks of no more than 60.
I've dropped my time with this approach to 15:58, then 15:46, finally 15:27 when I started thinking about breaking 15:00 for the first time.
To cut this 27s and after years of running no more than 60 miles week I thought that it was time to increase my mileage. For 1.5 years I started running more and more, progressively until I've reached the gold number of 100 mpw. I also noticed my weeks were not consistent. I could run 110 miles one week, and the next one I would run 60-70 due to fatigue. Some of my slow runs were so slow that i was over 8:00 per mile. Anyway, I thought i was going the right way. I've never trained more than that though i could only drop 8 seconds of my PB to 15:19. Actually I could not broke neither my 3k PR nor my 10k PR.
i stopped training for one year due to work. I did run like three times a week, but mostly jogs.
It has been almost one year that I started my come back on trying to run fast.
My approach was different this time, and I was really not expecting to beat my PR's or so. Here is what a normal week has been for me for the last 10 months:
Monday: Speed intervals - 200/400/600m. A total of 5-6 miles
Tuesday: 5 miles easy
wednesday: Tempo Runs. I started running like 1 mile, up to 5 miles. The total of my exercise was never more than 8 miles with warm up, cool down.
thursday: longer intervals, like 2x2 miles, 3xmile, down to 800 minimum. Total about 5-6 miles
friday: 5 miles easy
saturday: Long run - 10-12 miles max.
sunday: Rest
For these 10 months I've never run more than 40 miles week. And still I was able this month to run a 14:54 5k which I never expected I could do. I've run over 30s faster than my PB while running less than the half of my mileage per week. Sometimes I actually did rest twice/week.
I also shattered my 3k PB.
I decided to share so those who are crazily trying to reach over 100 miles a week could consider investing more on the quality of their trainings.
