San Francisco on 200 a day?

Is 200 bucks a day for a couple to cover meals and sightseeing in the Bay area a far guestimate? Wine costs/corkage charges not included.

Using Zagat's food scale as reference we want to eat in places with 24 or better family run places. We are looking at eating out for brunch/lunch and dinner every day. A couple of meals will be "picnic style' great bread like Craftsman and Wolves or Liguria, artisanal cheese, some foodie butcher type sausage or cold cuts.

Owner operated restaurant suggestions also welcome.

$200 a day should be fine as long as you don't go crazy at Gary Danko, Lazy Bear or the like.

Be aware, restaurant reservations in SF have gotten crazy to get for the best places (and even the second tier restaurants), even on a weekday. So you should figure out where you want to eat and make reservations ASAP. There are places that take walk-ins (State Bird Provisions gets a long line before they open), but I doubt that you want to be hunting around or standing in line when you are ready eat.

And while Zagat is a good place to start, in SF, I find Yelp to be better.

And while I'm being a pompous know-it-all, do you really want to eat both a big brunch/lunch and dinner every day? I'd consider one upscale and one really good local ethnic to keep things interesting and the budget down.

ate at a great hole in the wall "cafe macaroni" in the financial district. didn't need a reservation and they are happy to let you order off the menu. I don't fine dine often, but I think it was pretty good.

Thanks for the heads-up on reservation timeframe info. Mon to Thurs lunch broadens the options in the hard to book places and we are flexible about late seatings.

Picked Zagat to indicate the level of food we want because it's a well known metric not because we think it's the best source. Good to know yelp is a good SF source. This is also not the trip where we search for the basement place under the drycleaners where you sit on folding chairs and eat off empty beer kegs because they have the absolutely best larb in America.

A neighbor just said that the better places in SF are not noted for being corkage friendly. The wines we will be bringing have a less than 2% chance of being from a producer they have on their list and certainly not these specific wines. Any personal insight to corkage policies?

We are early in the planning and we have not really started research.

A must (IMO) is Cafe Ethiopia, on Valencia (between 20th/21st?) in the Mission district. Just as tasty as you'd find in Addis Ababa, albeit with high quality meat. get the sample platter and you'll be rather happy (recommend doing this post-run, best to be hungry). Worth stopping at Ritual or Four Barrel for coffee as well, both nationally renowned coffee houses. finally, Mission Pie (on Mission, around 28th-ish) has some pretty amazing selections. have fun~
