Mo knows he has practically no chance of winning London. Okay, fine, no one can fault him for being realistic for his first marathon- but here is my problem:
This year's London Marathon is perhaps the most competitive marathon ever. Professional marathoning, unlike hobbyjogger marathoning, is not about finishing; it is about competing.
It's not the most fair comparison, since he had run many marathons before, but Ryan Hall showed a million times more guts when he put himself out there, win or lose, in Boston.
Bekele opted not to run a competitive marathon, but for all that, he still won a world major his first time out. Mo doesn't want to implode his first marathon, and juxtapose himself to Bekele.
Lastly, Mo will be taking it out in 62:15, basically proving that he is not planning on trying to beat Bekele's debut time- even on a faster course- since almost no one negative splits at this level. To me, this states pretty clearly that Mo isn't putting himself out there; he isn't shooting to be the best marathoner in the world... so why bother? It's probably all about the money, which, I guess I can't really fault him on too much...
Man-up, Mo. No one ever faults someone for going for it, even if it means sacrificing image a little.
