Sad to learn about iconic Millrose Games iconic meet director Howard Schmertz who passed away tonight. A true gentleman in a sport that needed more of him.

The Millrose Games were a labor of love for the Schmertz Family. Yes a true gentleman.
Truly a good man. RIP.
He was Millrose. It died when he turned it over to Global Arhletics and Wetmore.
I knew Howard for all of my life. . . that's some 5 plus decades. He was a good friend, family man, mentor, humanitarian, diplomat and a million other wonderful things. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. My deepest sympathies to Judy, his children and all who were close.

His grandson is gonna tear it up this season after running a 2:51 1000 indoors!

Amen. Howard was one of the Best. Thank you, Howard, for all that you did for the sport. Hats off.
It make sense that the decline of track & field in the U.S. coincides with the demise of the great meet directors.
Who out there now can hold a candle to someone like Howard?
Actually I did hold a candle for Howard once but I do get your point. He was missed before he passed.
Thank you all for your kind words. It kind of freaked me out that I saw the first post not 15 minutes after I found out my father had passed just 2 weeks ago!
I grew up around the track world, though never a part of it myself. I always knew how much he loved T&F, but honestly he was so humble that I never realized just how much he was loved and respected. We miss him more than words can say but we know he lived a great, long life doing what he loved. Guess you can't ask for better than that! BTW, wondering who you are RJS, as your beautiful post sounds like it comes from someone we must know!
Amy,
I don't know if you are monitoring this but I just pulled it up to see what has been added. Your comments brought tears to my eyes. Yes, I knew your dad. Your dad and mine were best friends. I do not want to post my full name on this site but we are in Arizona so, I assume you now know who this is.
Again, my deepest, deepest sympathies.

OMG yes I know now! And I guess you are a runner! Well your parents have survived all the other couples. Guess it's that good clean Arizona air! Please send my love to them. Thanks again for your kind words!
