In addition to Ritz, you left out Dieter Baumann (12:54, 137 lbs) and Bob Kennedy (12:58, 146 lbs) who are non-Africans ahead of Teg on the list. So you actually left out three of the top five non-Africans at 5k.

How have I only now heard of Baumann?

I agree the top top has a bit more mass than the general 12:50s field. Maybe the amount of testosterone needed to be a world beater usually excludes ectomorphs. (I mean natural testosterone/athleticism)

Abdi Bile and Juantorena proved it is better to be big and strong.

Whatcha gonna do when 170-pound Bile is lumbering along at the back of the pack, waiting to strike? Whatcha gonna do when El Caballo jogs to the bell in 49 seconds?

How is it possible that the average weight of the 3 fastest long distance runners in history (outside Africa) is 155 lbs, while 99% of college, elite, and just fast runners in general is closer to 140 lbs?

I am talking about Solinsky (12:55), Mottram (12:55) and Tegenkamp (12:58). I know Teg is more like 6th fastest over 5000m, but you get my point.

So you selectively pick 3 guys that the heaviest, while ignoring other light dudes such as Kennedy, Ritz, and Rupp.

Not to mention if you go by BMI a guy like Mottram who is 6'2 155' is not that different from a 5'10 135 Rupp.

Weights given for elites is BS. No F($&ing way Mo is 128. If he cracks 120 it's cuz he hasn't had a bowel movement in 7 days.

Sports reference has terribly inaccurate stats, and only includes what was listed on some given Olympic Games release.

In the US, runners with ideal body types (5'6"-5'9", very light frame) are usually selected out of sports by a school athletics system that emphasizes upper body sports (football, basketball and baseball, primarily). Kids who have a very light frame tend to be pretty terrible at the traditional peewee/little league sports in elementary school and middle school and get the message that they should be doing things like music, art and computers instead of athletics. By the time high school rolls around, the kids on the XC team are usually kids who are decent at the big three sports, but not good enough for the varsity level. So, the US scholastic athletic system is largely drawing on the wrong body type for distance running. Thus, it is not surprising to see some of the top times coming from runners who are 6'+.

I'm 6'2" and I got down to 155 once when I thought lighter was better and didn't eat properly. Became anemic. Don't see how these guys do it.

165 lbs is ideal for me.

No, I was looking at the top 5000m times for runners born outside of Africa, and on the top 6 list I saw the ONLY 3 runners that look more muscular or bigger than 99% of all good distance runners (outside Africa) at the college to elite/pro level. I thought it was strange. And if I would have to bet my life on it, I would think that Ben True would be the next on this top 6 list over 5000m, and he also looks like a muscular athlete that could compete in other sports than running. And I think he was a XC skier before running.

THIS

Due to on/off season differences due to clen cycles, they are wise to not ever communicate their real weight.

Interestingly many fast Aussie distance guys have been relatively big.
Buster at 6.2 and 158
Deek who ran sub 2.8 at Boston without a big tailwind or a peleton of pacemakers was 5.11 and 155.
Clarke who soloed 27.39 on a rough old cinder track in the 1960s was 6.1 and 160.
Clayton who took the marathon record from 2.12 to 2.09 in 67 (@Fukuoaka) and then ran a solo 2.08 at Antwerp in 69 was 6.2 and 160.
O'Brien ran wr for 2 miles and the steeple back in the early 70s he was 5.11 and 165.
Dazza Wilson, 27.37 and 60.02 was not a little guy either.

Kiwi Rod Dixon was also pretty big guy.

Why are you only using non-Africans as an example? A lot of African marathoners are skin and bone.

That is like saying that if you take away the top 200 marathoners of all time some European is the fastest marathoner.
