The Olympics bring war and poverty. Forbid Olympics now.
The ones from Sarajevo are very depressing.
further proof the olympics should only be held in the us, canada or england. Not one of those countries were mentioned
Sarajevo is the most depressing to me for a number of reasons. First off, it seems to be in such a beautiful place. At least the pictures of the ski jumps, bobsled, and I've seen pictures of the Alpine and Nordic venues elsewhere, such a beautiful setting! The urban venues of Athens, Munich, Beijing, to me they are just urban venues, not as special. Secondly, I was a college freshman when the Sarajevo games took place and was a ski racer. I don't remember the 1976 winter games, but 1980 Lake Placid was held about 2 hours north of where I grew up so that was kind of the first time I got excited about winter Olympics. 4 years later, Sarajevo, I was totally into it. Third, I now have a number of neighbors who have emigrated from this region and on occasion I'll have a conversation with them about where they come from or what their lives were like before they settled in the US. So much sadness when they talk about their homeland.
Such a waste, in the big picture to build these elaborate venues without any vision for how to keep them relevant after the Olympics. Sure, while they're being built there is a big economic impact. And then the Olympics are all shiny for their 2 weeks. But afterwards there needs to be a plan to continue to attract athletic competition and other events that will bring tourist dollars to these areas. That doesn't seem like a ground-breaking concept. When you read about certain cities that recognize that athletic tourism can have a huge economic impact and build venues to become a player in that game, you just wonder why these places that host the Olympics don't have the same vision.
The picture of the 1936 Olympic swim stadium must have been taken during the winter months. The swim stadium is still in use from May to October, admission is about 5 EURO. Beautiful stadium btw.
Every one of those stadiums were built with taxpayer funds except for Los Angeles which has in it's City Charter a ban on using public funds for private ventures.
The picture of the Beijing Bird's Nest Stadium was dishonest. They just took a blurry picture of a fully functioning stadium. They are hosting IAAF world championships in 2015.
Those all make GREAT Call of Duty maps
I swam in the Barcelona olympic swimming stadium - amazing place, and jam packed with kids having a great time.
and I use the Lake Placid Olympic facilities every year - what a legacy the games have had up there - beyond great.
President Obama should test the Pentagon's new hypersonic missiles on Olympia Stadion Berlin since Merkel and Germany refuses to atone for the Nazi Holocaust and Palestinian Diaspora and pay back $Trillion is reparations it still owes to the world.
i'm fascinated by this. I don't know why but i am. To think of how much money goes towards building these complexes and to have them turn up this way. just seems like a waste of money and lack of planning on the host cities. i couldn't help while watching the Sochie Olympics to sit there and wonder what would become of those facilities after the olympics were over. would they end up like the ones on this list? for a moment i actually thought it would be a good idea to build a complex somewhere that was agreed upon by the IOC and only hold the olympics there. Just do away with bidding to host them. i know that won't happen but i'd like to know how much money is lost in building these facilities and then not using them for anything afterwards. just seems like a lot of money wasted.
Munich Olympic Parc suffered greatly from the resident soccer club (FC Bayern München) building their own stadium (Allianz arena).
Why do I keep seeing these photos described as "haunting"? There's nothing haunting about them.
Regardless. Start leaning to read and write chicken scratch now. China will rule over you American chimps soon enough.

That's cool.
Mitt Romney was saying the Sochi Olympics cost $50 billion to put on. SLC (which he administered) was only $3 billion, and Atlanta was $3 billion. Blows my mind how much more they spent on a WINTER games. (Even London was only around $10 billion.)
I think he has a good point. The competitions were just as good when they spent 3 billion as 50.
A lot of these have proven to be hyperbolic or untrue.
Does the SLC price tag include the hookers the needed to secure the rights to host the games?
