One of our employees in Albuquerque texted me and now i've called him to confirm.
He says that Grunewald told him Alberto Salazar has filed a protest and is trying to get her DQd for the contact she made with Hasay with less than 200 to go.
My personal opinion is that's absurd.
Yes there was contact. But Hasay got blown out over the last 200 and finished 4th. I don't understand why anyone who got blown out would protest anything. It's like losing a basketball game by 10+ points and then saying, "But I got fouled midway though the 4th quarter."
I understand why coach Salazar would be upset. It sucks to lose, and there was contact, but the coaches are the ones who are supposed to see the big picture and take a step back and say, "Jordan. You've had a great season. We'll work on that finish and get them next time."
If she lost by a tiny bit, yes protest. But you get blown out? No. That's not sporting.
And don't tell me a foul is a foul. Refs in all sports call things differently at different points of the game. If this happened 10 meters from the finish in a narrow finish, ok. But nearly 200 meters out in a blow out?
No.
I hope the judges do the right thing.
