If he's opening his season with a 13:01, I do believe that with good pacers and a good day, he could threaten 3:48.45. That is hard for me to swallow.

I also believe Rupp can get at least the American indoor mile record if not the outright world record. The thing is, if he's going to try for the mile indoor record wouldn't he have wanted to do a shorter prep race such as an 800 or a 1k? Al Sal is unconventional in his race approach, that's for sure.
I don't understand fandom or not for runners.
What about him makes you NOT a fan of his?
For me, I'm just a fan of good running. Might be happy for a certain runner if they overcame something, but I've never found myself rooting for one American runner over another.

It's obvious what he means in this context. He's not talking about liking or disliking Rupp they way you'd be a fan of a local sports team (which would be totally irrelevant to his point). He's saying that he thinks (or at least used to think) that Rupp is generally overrated. It's relevant because it puts his prediction in context. Even a skeptic is now expecting great things.

I doubt he can get the mile AR, but it is possible. For a number of reasons, I don't think he can come with in a second of the mile WR. There is simply and practical limit to how fast Rupp is ever going to run in the mile. I am surprised with how fast he has already run the mile; however, Rupp has proven to be an adept indoor runner and it is not uncommon for one of the world's best 5K/10K runners to be good at the mile.
Based on his recent 5K, Rupp is obviously in great shape, but for a mile WR attempt, I would have been more impressed had he recently run a 1:47x 800m. Except for Geb, all of the athletes who have run under 3:50 were milers. If Rupp's get's the indoor mile WR, that would make him like a sub-3:30 in an outdoors 1500m, which would send shock waves around the world.

I would imagine that his priorities for the indoor season are in order:
1) 3000 m indoor US + Worlds - medaling in a championship race
2) two-mile AR - should be within his capability if he has any shot at 1.
3) 5k AR - the softest of the 3 records
4) mile AR/WR - the least probable of his three record attempts.
With that in mind, it would seem the record attempt schedule is laid out so he's sharpening closing speed as he gets closer to the championship racing season.
He already has #3. I have no doubt about #2. #4 would be truly shocking.

That's a LOT of assuming. He says he's not a fan and then says if Rupp challenges the indoor WR that he would find that hard to stomach. Nothing in that makes it clear in any way that he just thinks Rupp is overrated. He didn't even present himself as a skeptic...just a person who is "admittedly not a Rupp fan". Sorry, but what you say should be clear is definitely not.

I hate dopers. I'd pay to thump that goofy looking head.
Flagpole, if you don't understand why someone might favor runner x over runner y, due to factors other than purely running ability, then there is no point for us to try to hash out why, as we simply don't see eye to eye on fandom. That's fine and not the point I'm trying to raise here. It's baffling that Rupp could threaten a WR. I'm not saying I EXPECT him to, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Wow, really going out on a limb there aren't ya?

I, admittedly not a Flagpole fan, think Flagpole is 100% correct on this.
Ha, just kidding. I usually agree with Flagpole except when it comes to pacing teammates in races. Flagpole is insane on this one subject.

Whats his thoughts on that?
I think he will get the AR, but he won't dip under 3:49. What would the WR be if Hicham ran it more than once? 3:47? 3:46?

Replace with "I, admittedly not a Patriots fan, think they will win the Super Bowl" and do you care? No, that's sports. Why does running have to be full of people who root for everyone? I don't like Rupp because of his personality and the fact he went to Oregon (rival in college). I respect him as a runner and did cheer for him when he won silver because my love of country trumped my dislike for him. Would I have rather seen Solinsky or Ritz win it, hell yeah.
Without the ability to kick a 26-27 for the last lap, it will be very difficult to break the WR. Not sure he has that in him right now. Or ever, indoors at least.
I think people always underestimate Rupp's potential as a miler. He ran 4:01 in high school after all! Maybe all the focus on his endurance abilities and on his fast high school 5k made people assume he couldn't be a miler. Yet his inability to kick until recently might indicate it's been the gradual build up of endurance over the years that he has lacked, not the speed. Idk

PEDs.
If it's too good be true, it is.

I see how you think that.
Rupp is not a miler. However, I'm wondering if he will break the world record in the mile. That is nuts. His progression is like no one elses. There are two possibilities.
1) Coach Salazar has figured out something no one else has.
2) Rupp is doping.
I don't see any other possibilities.
I was trying to come up with everything that falls under #1.
No one else does the workouts after races. That goes under #1.
Rupp never gets hurt. That could because of all of the anti-gravity and underwater treadmills. That falls into #1.
Anything else?
Anything else?
I tend to think that he has somewhat of a shot at the mile, but 3:48.45 is probably a little out of reach. That said, after running 7:30.16 last year and opening with a 13:01, I think he has a better shot at Bekele's 8:04 2 mile WR. Both the mile and two mile indoor records are weaker than the outdoor records, but it would be super cool to see him get either one.
