@FatBoy...
I actually did get asked to run for a smaller D-3 college in my state and had committed, but around July this year, I backed out. I just had no motivation whatsover to run. I think my failures in my senior year of high school got to me. Was kicked off the XC team for the last 5 meets, missing my shot at state, and that added fuel to my performance in track. In the winter offseason though last year, i went out every day and gave it my 100 percent in every workout. I was a 53.1 guy my junior year and 2:03.1. Then track came around and I PR'd in the first meet, running 52.1 open and a 2:03.3 double. My coaches depended on me in every meet to score points, and go out there to break the open 800 record which was 1:59.31 FAT. I kept on running 2:02s and 2:03s then last week of april i ran a 2:01.7 and the following monday, ran a 2:00. Then rolled around the conference meet, had a open 400, open 800, and 4x400m triple. I was told by my coaches to hold back in the open 800 to save energy for the 4x4... and that was my worst mistake ever running-wise. Won the open 400 in 51.44. I then did go easy in the open 800, 62 first lap in 6th place. Was not even tired. Felt like i couldve went 56-57 easy. then 700 meters in the race, I engaged my deadly kick and finished with a 2:03, beating out 5 others in the last 60 meters. Insane race. Wish I had it on video. The thing is I felt like I couldve went 1:58 that night and my 4x4 split of 51.1 proved that. SMH. So HS kids reading this and your coach tells you to hold back in any race that you feel like you could do something great, then f@--ing do it! That following week I went 51/2:02/51 at districts, same triple, and made it to state in all three. Got sick with something flu-like in between state and districts. I absolutely felt like sh-- at state, ran a 52.60 open, 2:03.9 open 800, but did run my 50.49 PB, (all-out, painful, white vision type, puking, race) in the 4x400. Just my story and words of wisdom.
