Thinking about signing up for Amazon Prime. We buy lots of stuff for our kids there and currently use another family member's Netflix. Is it worth the almost $80 a year?
Anybody have it and what do you use it for?

Shipping costs aren't cheap. I have it and if you buy enough stuff it's worth it. If you buy one thing a year, it isn't.
I just got it. I am not impressed with the selection of videos available. It is much inferior to Netflix. I will need to order quite a few things to get value out of it

That sums it up for me too. The streaming free content doesn't compete very well with netflix. It's not compatible with tivo either. Gotta use a BR player.

True, the video is way inferior to Netflix, but it is worth it for the shipping alone if you buy a lot from Amazon.
It makes you buy a bunch of useless s*** you would never otherwise buy become it all comes in 2 days. Totally worth it.
I buy a lot of stuff and love the prime shipping. It's really helpful when you realize you need a gift for someone at the last minute.
I'm curious of those who say they buy a lot of stuff on Amazon; what is it that you're buying? Do you shop there for gifts or everyday items for yoursel? do you find the best deals on?
If you live in a state that doesn't charge sales tax yet on Amazon, it is an awesome deal. I buy the following on Amazon, and it turns out to be cheaper than going to Walmart or Target.
I buy these things regularly on Amazon:
Razor Blades
Shampoo
Body Wash
Face Wash
Wife's Skin Cream
Laser Printer Toner
AA Batteries
Water filter for my fridge
I have bought these things this year as well:
Laser Printer
Headphones
SD Card
HDMI Cord
24 inch Monitor
Mizuno Running Shoes
Garmin Forerunner Watch
Have you looked at amazon? You can buy anything you want. Are the deals the absolute best. Sometimes. But they are pretty much always close to the best and so if you don't want to spent hours comparison shopping it works out.It changes your shopping habits when you have 2 day free shipping. When faced with the choice of driving 40 mins to target ( drive15 each way, parking, walking to and from the store) or going online and order some dish detergent, toilette paper, and the rest of my Target list, it is a no brainer.Track everything you buy and how much you spend on it for 1 month. Then see how much it would cost on amazon and see if you would save money.

Thanks for the examples. That's pretty much what I was wondering about. We buy baby stuff like diapers and formula right not but wasn't sure if I was missing out by not buying more household stuff on there. If I had the free shipping, then I could probably start to buy that stuff as well. I'm leaning toward getting Prime.
I have it and with the rate I buy stuff online (several items per week) it pays off very quickly. I get a lot of bulk food (oats, raisins, rosewater), toilet paper, and so on. I don't think I could ever go back to standard delivery.
The free shows are a bonus. The selection isn't amazing but is growing. I got to watch Sherlock for free and now I'm watching The Good Wife.
I think it's great. Mainly use it for free & discounted kindle books and free movies, but will now consider ordering everyday crap that we're buying at the grocery store or Walmart
bought my Mom a Prime membership for Christmas. She's a big reader & loves it
They offer a free trial almost every year, and I use it over the holidays. I just cancelled it. During the rest of the year, I think they still do free shipping on orders over $25 for most things, if you're not in a hurry. So, if you just plan your shopping, the shipping is free. So, no, I don't think it's worth it.
In the past year I've bought books, CDs, sports bras, running shoes, running socks, Cards Against Humanity (best party game ever...everyone must buy this!), amazon gift cards, and a few other items.
I've had amazon prime for 3-4 years and find it well worth it. and i don't watch any of the videos. it's all about the free 2-day shipping. you can buy anything there, usually at very good cost...i average about 150 orders/yr.
and it is really cheap to hump up to overnight shipping when you really need that TP in a hurry
I love it. If you're a student it's only $40, which is a no-brainer. For $80 it's still probably worth it. Once the shipping is free, you'll find yourself buying a lot of other stuff you wouldn't otherwise because it becomes affordable.
For me it's the opposite of what others are saying. Before I would buy extra stuff to bump me over the 25 free shipping limit. Say my order was 19 and 6 shipping....it would see dumb to pay 25 for one thing so I'd buy something for 6 so I'd pay the same amount and get free shipping. Now with prime I just pay the 19.
Also here's a key point. You can share prime. (Not talking about sharing your amazon account) Say you live with a roommate or gf or have siblings or parents or kids. Prime lets you share your account and you can split up the cost. I pay $19.75 rather than the full amount. You just send them an invite and they need to know your birthdate and you're good to go.
Prime is very worth it for me. Free 2-day shipping is clutch. I bought a mattress this year... free 2-day shipping was very worth it. I'm not sure what shipping would have cost, but the mattress weighed about 80 lbs.
Another good way to save with Prime is to set up "subscribe and save" on items you buy regularly. You can set up reoccurring purchases that are shipped to you on a schedule. Setting up the "subscribe and save" knocks a couple more dollars of the item. We use this for dog food and toilet paper, among other things.
