Why is ANY reality show popular?
Perhaps it is because they market it well. I don't know the numbers but I cannot imagine it having a large viewing every week.

Good thing you don't work in programming. Why don't you google the ratings and get back to us, idiot?

For more than any other reason these days, people watch television programming to affirm their beliefs. They watch so-called reality TV in order to affirm their belief that they are intellectually superior to others. They watch extremist "news" programming like Fox News and MSNBC to affirm their own extremist political beliefs. The list goes on.
People no longer watch (or listen) to programming to be entertained or legitimately informed. Again, it's all about affirmation.

That might be the best explanation of reality TV shows, and majority of any TV shows, that I have ever heard.
It's not even "reality". It's all fake.
I saw 30 min. of that show once and that's all it took.

This explains why I watch porn

Good ratings don't explain WHY it's popular, only that it IS popular. I have never seen the show but from clips I've seen during this controversy it seems to be in the trend of "Confederate Mystique" that has been popular as of late. I don't understand the celebration of alligator wrestling, moonshining, or pawn shops either but it seem to be dominating the reality TV show market.
And to those that would say that this suspension is due to political correctness I'd say that this is a capitalist issue. A for-profit company decided that it was best for their brand to distance themselves from this viewpoint. There was no public call for action.

Really outstanding explanation, Thank you for your excellent thought.
It really is a manufactured redneck image they created, check out the before and after pictures in this video:
Agreed. I live in a pretty affluent area outside DC that is very conservative and I have noticed an overwhelming trend of people playing 'redneck'. Its very in with Wonderbread white american burbinites. Bad popular country music is large part of this as well. That's why all these shows are popular people get to pretend they can relate. Whats funny is they are all frauds just like all reality crap TV.

Well, I just wasted 5 minutes of my life but i did get to to directly in to the eyes of Satan.
I do NOT get it.
The "affirmation thing" is certainly on the right track as to explaining it's popularity. I'm in TN and my parents and my wife's family all talk about that show- A LOT. I'll confess that I've never seen it.
From what I gather they like it because: there's no bad language, no sex, it's safe for a 10 yr old to watch. Those guys are "people like us" white religious, working class from the south.
If you look at other network tv shows there's nothing like that. Even prime time comedy shows are very raunchy (Im no prude but 2 & a half men, Mike & Molly, 2 Broke Girls, etc.. are just nasty.)

Good post. My boy on ESPN radio - Colin Cowherd - basically said the same thing. People aren't looking for information on talk radio but rather affirmation.
I like your handle - a take on Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow.

I know. Consider talk radio call-in forums. Its always some host with a conservative viewpoint acting like he wants a debate but the only people that call in are the ones that agree with him. That's how it is everywhere in media these days.

Duck Dynasty is to reality tv what Journey is to music, I would have thought you loved it.
Pencil me in as someone who enjoys it without 1) relating to it 2) believing it to be unscripted. Of course I know it's a bunch of educated businessmen putting on a front, and not a true reality show, but that doesn't preclude me from enjoying it like any other sitcom.
I'm not sure I can completely explain why I enjoy the show. To those who say that only hillbillies and people with an IQ below 100 watch the show, I would argue that the humor in it is more complex than most popular laughtrack-laden garbage sitcoms today, like 2 and a Half Men or The Big Bang Theory. They generally do a good job coming up with unique situations that I wouldn't see in a normal show.

That video is f****n hilarious. Skip to 3 minutes for the before and after pics.
First it is ignorant of all the people to give their opinion when they haven't even watched the show. The people that have watched a little bit don't even understand what they are watching.
As far as Rojo listening to that Cowhurd idiot, I feel sorry for you. When you get older and wiser, you will realize how big a waste of time that is.
Duck Dynasty is NOT a reality show. It is NOT a scripted
reality show.
Duck Dynasty is a SITCOM that uses a "regular" family as the actors. The reason people love the show is because it is goofy and fun and uses the same old jokes and skits people liked in the 50s 60s 70s and 80s. It is just an old style sitcom.
