Prolific marathoner Mary Akor fails drug test - accept 2 year sanction from USADA
The sad part is she isn't that very good.
...tainted meat from what I heard
jaysus, she trained in Kenya too.
I have to think at some point it will become a stigma to have trained in Kenya

She's won a fair amount of prize money in road races over the years and represented the US
Yet another American doper. It's sad that this is so much a part of our sports culture.

she's the best american distance runner in a long time to go down - the US had a very good clean streak going til this.
Still - she was a C lister

and not associated with any groups or coaches, thank god
She went to a lot of other places not only Kenya. Do you think the steroids stayed in her system since 2008?

I wouldn't call someone who's won Grandma's a few times, made a few US teams, and beat Deena a few months prior to her drug test positive not "very good". She runs a lot of 2:3X marathons, over and over again. Now we know how she does it.

I would say she was good, probably some where near the botton of the top tier. In retrospect, she ran a lot of money road races that don't test and frequently changed her training site. I think she did most of her training is Europe and Africa. The fact that it is only a 2 year ban means there are extinguating circumstances and/or perhaps she is cooperating. Also, I think she is part of lot of positives WADA came up with about 7 months ago that they for some reason have been holding onto.
That stinks... wrote:

Yeah, I bet she has no plans to payback all the prize money she stole while she cherry picked races. Friggin drug cheat.

Actually, it could be tainted meat. She tested positive for clenbuterol at a marathon in Mexico.
http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/13/two-players-fail-drug-test-in-latest-mexican-trouble-with-widespread-clenbuterol-contamination/from the above linked article:
The World Anti-Doping Agency acquitted the Mexican players during the Gold Cup because the substance is found in abundance in Mexican meat.
“WADA has subsequently received compelling evidence … that indicates a serious health problem in Mexico with regards to meat contaminated with clenbuterol,” the organization said then. “This is a public health issue that is now being addressed urgently by the Mexican government.”
In addition, out of 208 urine samples taken at the 2011 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Mexico, 109 tested positive for the substance.

Sounds familiar, maybe I'll remember who I'm thinking of after this sushi.
It's not a steroid; it's a stimulant.
Wikipedia:
"Clenbuterol is a β2 agonist with some structural and pharmacological similarities to epinephrine and salbutamol, but its effects are more potent and longer-lasting as a stimulant and thermogenic drug. It causes an increase in aerobic capacity, central nervous system stimulation, blood pressure, and oxygen transportation. It increases the rate at which body fat is metabolized while increasing the body's BMR."

No wonder I run so well after eating those Tijuana "beef" tacos.

this is fascinating - I wonder if she tried to fight this on those grounds.
Given the amount of time between the positive test and acceptance of the ban, it would seem she did challenge the finding.

So Mary Akor, with no sponsor who likely lives below the poverty line, gets a ban for Clenbuterol, the same substance that Galen Rupp, Mo Farah and the rest of the NOP use, but with an exception granted on the basis of a diagnosis of asthma from Dr. Harmon.
Yep, that pretty much seems fair.
