What is the deal with the Army position?
What is the deal with the Army position?
Army doesn't care. They will wait until they are good and ready to find a coach. There is a reason they are terrible!
Reder makes a pretty big chunk of change for being a men's only throws coach. I'm guessing Iowa couldn't afford him
Didn't Rock just graduate? Didn't think a program like UNCG would go with female w/ 0 experience but I assumed they would hire a female.
Hiring a female should not at all be a surprise in my opinion since some demographics will always be targeted.Pearson himself had only limited volunteer and GA experience to get the HC position.

Out of nowhere, Penn State has found their finalists and will conduct interviews next week with:
John Gondak
Scott Richardson of Auburn
Ken Harden of Florida State
Ross is a good guy, but he sure moves around alot. Western Illinois, Purdue, Miami of Ohio, Virginia, Ohio State in the last 10 years or so. Not sure why he seems to do a good job everywhere he goes.Omara has had two jobs in the same state, and also done well. Does anyone know of any other accomplished throws coaches who are from Iowa and may want to move back to the Hawkeye state?

Omara would be good, as would Ross Richardson who was a finalist at Nebraska. The carthage college throws coach is a long shot and I think he may have been promoted to head coach at Carthage (though if I'm him I would leave for a big10 job).

For some reason I have a hard time believing Harden will go to PSU. There have been many better jobs that he could have easily gotten. I was always under the impression he was happy at FSU and was kind of "next in line to the throne" when Braman retires.
given the position, i'm surprised this is not a stronger final group

Long Beach State has their first cross country meet of the season on Saturday, and they are still taking their time hiring a distance coach. People at LBST have told me that they have narrowed their search down to 3 candidates. Chris Shane, a guy from from California, and a young guy from Texas. Let's hope LBST can hire a coach by Pre-Nats.
Speculation, looking at the past coaches that have come and gone from Long Beach (XC types) what makes you thing the HC is looking for that same formula, since it keeps failing on him and every 3-5 years he is looking for a new coach.
Also looking at Long Beach, they are not lighting it up in XC, but are a good track team, evident by back-to-back conference track titles, My guess is that's where the coaching search will focus.

Chris Shane related to Pat Shane ??
Ross has gotten dicked around by head coaches... The last 3 jobs - new head coaches came in after he was there working and made changes to bring in their "guys" Very bad luck is all.... Good coach

I thought the same thing. He passed on the Tennessee job. Why would he take Beth's old job for half the money.

The Hawaii hires:

Curious to see what his credentials were:
"In addition to being a highly experienced distance coach, Coach Boyce is also very familiar with the Hawaiian ways. At Pacific University in Oregon, his Track & Field Team hosted an annual luau following their final home meet of the season!"
Yeah, he's an easy guy to work with and the rest of the world has the problem.

Braman is retiring from FSU soon. He's been looking a little "lost" at track meets the last few years.

Chris Shane is the son of BYU head coach Patrick Shane. The last I heard, Chris Shane was let go at USF during the summer. I don't have any details on why that happened. I don't know if he is interviewing for any head coaching positions right now. But I doubt he is in the running over at Long Beach State.

Look at D2 and D3 national and conference results over the last 3 years and you will understand quickly why I mentioned those 2 schools.
I'm not saying they are bad coach. In fact the D2 and D3 quality of throwing is going up and several guys can compete and beat a good majority of D1 thrower.
But my comment was towards why O'Mara isn't a good choice for Iowa? Also it wasn't directed at you.

Not true at all. He screwed over Miami University by leaving them cause he wanted something "big time".

Totally understand and didn't mean my comment as argumentative or negative towards yours. It seems like you know more than most about the throws community. Just explaining why I mentioned those guys, cause they really can get it done. Having coached in a fair number of different situations I have to admit I do get a bit annoyed when people think only a D1 coach should be considered for a Big D1 job. Pat Ebel at Penn State is a great example of a D3 "lifer" going D1 and taking care of business right away. Many coaches would not even have considered Pat...
I think Coach Woody will ask a lot of people and build his list, but move quickly. I am guessing they will have their guy by Sept 15.
