Well, two things he may have going for him--
1) Extreme preponderance of ST muscle fibers, which are much more resistant to trauma than FT muscle fibers. His incredibly slow PRs of 13:58.62 and 29:02.33 would seem to support this.
2) An extremely efficient, "shuffling" running style, with very little up-and-down movement, resulting in less pounding. This also seems to be true--look at the segment at about 35 seconds in:
