Max King: Did he really pin a race bib to his chest?

i watched a video interview with sage canaday (either on his youtube channel or irunfar) where he confirmed this story to be true. i don't know if that can be counted as a real confirmation, but as a thing of lore, the story has legs.

i believe it was during his cornell times (he was older than sage, not even sure they overlapped there).

That's nothing. I trained my whole life for a sub 4 hour charity marathon and the day before the race I had my bib replicated as a tattoo on my chest. It's the ultimate in race/chest/machismo. Try to keep up, boys.

It's true. I was on the team with Max and was "in the race" he pinned the bib to himself. How this is a message board topic is beyond me.

At least back when Max (and I) went to school, the dining halls on campus were all you can eat. If you went to multiple dining halls during the same "meal period" it would only count as one meal. In other words, you could go to 2, 3, 4+ dining halls if you really wanted during dinner and it would only count as one meal against your meal plan.

One year, some genius had an idea of running a race and eating a pre-specified meal at every dining hall. Course was approximately 2.5 miles and had (I believe) 6 meals - 5 dining hall meals and then a (cold) happy meal.

The Dining Hall classic became an annual tradition after cross country season (late November/early December). All entrants had race bibs for some reason I can't recall. Other random rules/traditions: no running in the dining halls, no puking in the dining halls, and a pre/post race weigh in. Most top finishers ran in the 30-40 minute range.

Max decided one year to pin the bib to himself. Yeah, he's a little nuts. I don't think he won that year though (he did win twice I believe).

I also ran the DHC that year (2002). To flesh out some additional color commentary, Max, the two time defending champion, finished 2nd that year. It was a close race and the guy who won set the course record. Max broke a glass window in a door in the student union as he chased the leader. It was one of those doors with loose hinges that closes rapidly after someone passes through it. He hit it going full speed as it was closing. I can't remember exactly, but he may have vomited in one of the dining halls too.

2002 was the final year of the DHC. The previous years had passed without many issues, but in 2002 people took it seriously and it was more competitive. In the aftermath, the coaches and school administrators were pissed about the vomit present at the entry of various dig halls, the broken window, and the fact that a few guys rode the dish belt to pass between two adjacent dining halls rather than leaving to have their cards swiped. We had to cancel it the following year.

Let's call it was it was; the race wasn't that close. As I recall, I smoked Max, which was some nice retribution for him passing me during the final meal (a happy meal) the previous year. I'm pretty sure that Steve was actually right ahead of him and had opened the door the swung back into Max shattering the the glass as he was trying to get outside before he vomited (don't believe he completely made it and there was some rules discussion since he vomited inside the university building, but outside of the actually dining hall.

But might as well add to the legend here and mention that sometime after pinning the number onto his chest, he concluded it didn't hurt that bad and decided to pierce his own lip as well. If you find a picture of him from his senior year you'll see a spike in his lower lip...homemade.
