Looks like Kenya has some more untapped talent! Get these guys on a track and watch the records tumble!
poor cheetahs
Not really as big a deal as people are making it out to be. Anyone who could even keep a cheetah in sight could run one down in less than an hour.
Overheating is catastrophic for them.
"The men waited until the hottest part of the day before launching the chase over a distance of four miles"
Cheetahs are the fastest animal on earth for only a few seconds. They are built for short bursts of speed and must stop quickly because they will overheat and need to breathe. The SUCK at long distances and keeping cool. Humans on the other hand, can sweat and go long distances at slow speeds. We basically outclass cheetahs in every way in this regard.
What's the shortest distance at which a human could beat a cheetah in a race?
Yep very interesting. The article says they chased the Cheetahs for 6.4km. In conditions that are probably 100 degrees Celsius. Impressive.
maybe a mile?
It's got to be more like a 5k. Maybe Komen could catch one at 3-4k but I see a cheetah running a 1500 in sub 3.
Interesting story, but why didn't they just stand guard over their herd of goats? I mean, it sounds like they have a lot of free time and it says their livelihood depends on their goats.
I wonder how you actually do the capturing once you catch up to the cheetah?

Depends.
If you are talking about an imaginary cheetah with human capability to strategize then the cheetah wins over a couple miles by pacing itself well.
However, if you are talking about a real cheetah, with no ability to plan out a race strategy then it will burn out quickly when chased and collapse within the first mile.
Any idiot could run down a cheetah.
From a biological/evolutionary perspective, the only reason that cheetahs are allowed to exist (and yes, I do mean allowed) is because hyenas consider them useful sources of easy meals. Otherwise they would just run them down and exterminate them.
That just makes my blood boil.

Why did these cheetahs take 4 miles to catch in the heat of the day then?

Was one of the chasers Daniel Komen in his prime? If not, please try to keep up with the flow of this thread.
I'm more impressed that none of the farmers killed the cheetah and they handed it over to the Wildlife Service.

Yes, overheating is the key to hunting in Africa. Humans can outrun ANY animal because they can pace themselves and the animals overheat. That is one reason that africans are so good at running is that their ancestors were doing it for thousand of years.
