So I'm currently a senior and I want to have a big track season. My current bests are 4.20 in the 1600m and 1.58 in the 800m, but I have had trouble improving my 800m time over my high school career. I started out as a 2.01 freshman but only improved one second my soph year and 2 seconds my junior year. On the other hand, my 1600m has progressed from 4.50 freshman year, 4.29 soph year, and 4.20 junior year (although I missed 9 weeks of training with a bad hamstring injury my junior track season). For some reason I cannot improve my 800m time significantly, and I really want to get into that sub 1.55 range before I graduate. What is something I can do to really improve my max speed (I have about a 53 second 400m relay split that hasn't changed since I was a freshman). I feel like the key to improving my 800m depends on how much faster I can get that 400m.
I currently do alot of physical therapy and wear inserts in my shoes (from the hamstring injury) but I'm weening myself off of them and I am not going to race with the inserts during track season.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
