My qualifying time is 5 min and 30 seconds faster than the standard qualifying time for my age group for the boston marathon. so i can register next friday if space permits
what are my chances of getting in out of 36,000 spots?

You're in, guaranteed.
how is that guaranteed?
yep, you're in
no way it fills the first week.
there are at least 25,000 qualifier entries this year.
now the folks who have a BQ of less than 5 min. below their age group standard.. that's the big quetions
i've seen several analyzes that go opposite ways.. some say it won't fill the first 2 weeks, some say it will definitely fill and some BQ's will be turned away
but BQ - 5:30, you're in, no doubt
go ahead and get a hotel room, if you haven't already

Because I said so.
I think you will definitely have a chance to try to register (so it won't fill before Friday), but it might fill during your registration period, so get online ASAP when the window opens. Or don't, and save the spot for my sister.
The Boston Marathon is a joke, and a waste of money. Qualifying for it is like getting a C grade on a state assessment test.
not knocking the Boston marathon but it used to be much harder to qualify. I remember when it used to be 2:50 open runners and 3:10 for 40 and over men. Different time and age but Boston is the superbowl of marathons. It is prestigious!

it might, but it's extremely unlikely to fill with BQ - 5. for that to happen, about 90+ percent of the BQ's will have to register - that's never happened before and won't happen this year
but it won't matter when he registers - no need to rush to the computer. just make sure it's in by 10 p.m. on Saturday... if it fills during the - 5 days, it's not first-come, first-in; they will sort the entries and admit the fastest in their age groups

BTW, reasonably priced hotel rooms are already pretty hard to come by for marathon weekend. I'd definitely start trying now. Marathon tours seems to have grabbed them all.
I updated my 2013 BM seeding with a faster time run in an October 2012 marathon - anyone know if can I use that October 2012 marathon to register for the 2014 BM or am I not allowed to use it anymore since I updated my seeding for last year's race with it already?
My 2013 BM finish time will qualify me too, but by less than 5 minutes. My October 2012 finish time qualifies me by 10+. Thanks.

For the 2014 Boston Marathon, qualifying times must be run on or after September 22, 2012

Debatable.
Ever since runnersworld clarified the qualification requirements after this years bombing, tons of runners have attempted and succeeded to qualify to the standards. In my Box some of the crossfit endurance folks have been motivated and most qualified in their first attempt. I predict it will sell out as quick as never before.
Thanks! I'd feel much better about getting in if I can register Wednesday instead of waiting until Monday.
Have they stated the qualifying times and window for Boston 2015?

With runners breaking the standards left and right, I expect them to change the standards once more.
In the end, it is still easy to qualify. Everyone can train to run a fast Marathon. If you want a real challenge, sign up for TOUGH MUDDER instead.
Didn't catch the bit about the fastest per age group bucket being accepted. Glad to hear it won't just be a land grab @ 10AM. Makes me feel better for only getting -9:15 and not hitting -10. Looking forward to going -30 in April.
As for filling up, at the Lehigh Valley Marathon yesterday, every single person I spoke had traveled a number of hours specifically to get the BQ, so I wouldn't be surprised if it sold out in a week. Frankly I'd be happier if it did as it should be an even more selective race and they should keep baring down on the BQ standards.

7/10, pretty good troll there

the qualifying window opens Sunday
"The qualification window for the 2015 Boston Marathon will begin on Saturday, September 14, 2013."
"The qualifying standards for the 2015 Boston Marathon, shown below, are the same as the qualifying standards for the 2013 and 2014 Boston Marathon."
http://www.baa.org/news-and-press/news-listing/2013/august/boston-marathon-registration-dates-and-field-size.aspxBoston is going to fill up before the -5min mark. 4,000 entries yesterday, maybe half that today. My guess would be 9,000-10,000 from the -10min group. That leaves 7,000-8,000 spots for the -9.59 folks. Cutoff will be around -6min.
The rest of the entries will go to those who couldn't finish last year, 5,000, plus charity runners, 9,000.
