Three for me, my two kids and wife. I have some young nephews and nieces that I would have to think on but probably not. It would be a tough call.

Basically the same for me.
Four. My wife and three kids.
Stupid to give up your life for someone who doesn't depend on you when someone who does suffers because of it.

What if your kids don't depend on you?

2 close friends, 3 family members
I honestly would give my life in most circumstances. The way I read the question was in an emergency setting. I would say countless, I'd save your life. I love my family tremendously but helping a person in a time of need, even if it means my life, is the right thing to do IMO.

It's impossible to save the life of someone who does not depend on you. If you're saving their life, by definition they depend on you.
it's fine and dandy to think that you would give up your life without hesitation for those closest to you, but unless and until it happens, you actually don't know. such a situation is so exceptionally rare to actually happen, it's more something to romanticize over and make yourself sound or feel heroic...to yourself.
instead, just live your life to the absolute fullest and it will help them do the same.
i would give up my life to save anyone, i see myself as a pretty worthless person who is actually pretty bad at everything.
I agree with your first paragrph that we don't know how we would act but we do hope to be heroic. The instead part of your response has me bewildered.

If I had children then them. Otherwise, none. Is that not what is predicted by the (unverifiable) evo psych?

What about a soldier who jumps on a hand grenade to save his buddies?
Conundrum
How many people can you think of that you would, without hesitation, give up your life to save?
You were a health care provider and saved lives w/o giving up your life?

Only Captain America does that.
Wife and two kids.
My parents.
12. 5 nephews (all 5 or younger), 3 siblings, 2 sibling-in-laws (the nephews need parents more than anyone needs me), girlfriend of 6 years, best friend Joey (he has a young daughter with a son on the way)
To clarify, Joey has a son on the way. His young daughter does not have a son on the way.

Very well-stated.
The vast majority of people are cowards yet we all love to fantasize about being a hero. That's why there are so many movies about the ordinary everyman who ends up defeating some big bad. The archetype resounds with many people and is very satisfying in a "Kick his a$s Sea Bass!" kind of way.
Or, think of it this way. Every now and again someone just goes nuts in a public place. Maybe starts waving a knife around, screaming, throwing chairs, or maybe even starts shooting at people. Those unlucky enough to be in the public place with that individual usually just scream and run away. It's pretty rare to hear of someone from the crowd stopping the guy. And even when that does happen, it's only one guy from a crowd of tens or hundreds.
Your parents? I don't think your kids or your parents would be happy with that decision.
Just one. And that's the Real Man who has already saved us all from traffic death: our dear leader Flagpole.
