Later this week I suppose he will have a much better test. If he wins and comes in around 1:43 I will be impressed. Even if he doesn't win I would be impressed with a 1:43.0. If he comes away with another 1:44.75 I'm not sure that it is much to brag about for a guy at Symmonds' level.
For a guy at Symmonds' level, winning IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT than running a 1:43.0.
In general I agree with you. Wins are more important than PRs. Championships trump national/world records.
All I am saying is that if the competition isn't up to snuff (which it does not look like it was here) then a win isn't really worth much at all. Further, a win next weekend in a similar time (unless conditions are atrocious) will simply mean that everyone is winding down their season - so big whip-de-coo.
On the other hand, a win in 1:43.0 or even a second place in that same time will actually be more impressive than a slow win (again, because of the stage of the season in a championship year as well as who is competing and who is not).
